I’m Jess. I’m 21, studying violin at the Royal Welsh College
of Music and Drama, and I am attempting a blog. I had expected this to sound a
little less like a personal introduction to an AA meeting.
I have something of a confession to make. Despite having
wild aspirations of being a writer for as long as I can remember, and being
rather strongly opinionated at times, I’ve never put hands to keyboard and
attempted any form of blogging before.
Time’s getting on
now, and I’m approaching the end of my music degree without really being aware
of many of the issues and history around my subject. It’s beginning to become
embarrassing that, as a young adult and apparent “budding musician”, I can only
shrug or offer a bovine “uhh” when my violin teacher, personal tutor, or even
fellow student asks if I’ve heard of this composer, or that soloist, or
attempts to engage me in discussion about pretty much most musical topics. My
violin teacher was scandalised when, proudly whipping out a photo of himself in
his own college days surrounded by apparently famous musicians, I was just
about able (with some squinting) to identify Menuhin. And no one else.
Being a
professional procrastinator, this is an attempt to get up and out, educate
myself, and hopefully educate/entertain anyone else who would allow me to
inflict my attempts at article-writing upon them. So, here goes nothing!
